2nd Annual Rio Negro
Peacock Bass Tournament Official Results
The 2nd Annual Rio Negro Peacock Bass Tournament was a great
success and the fish cooperated very nicely. We fished from
the Rio Negro Lodge located in Barcellos Brazil and we fished
the Ardidaha River. We fished this river primarily due to low
water conditions that would not allow us to fish anywhere else
and the results were fantastic.
The tournament is scored by
the 3 longest fish in inches caught each day by each angler
and the total
is then added up the
last day. There is a maximum of 9 fish allowed and the total
inches determine the winner. We give each boat a 36" ruler
and it is affixed to a board that has a 90 degree end and the
fish's jaw is placed there and then the measurement is taken
to the tail. The length is rounded down to the closest ¼ inch.
It is a good method because scales vary and they are difficult
to interpolate to the nearest ¼ pound. There are two
anglers per boat; they fish against each other and guides are
switched every day.

There
were a total of 8 anglers and they caught 566 Peacock Bass
in 3 days. This is a truly great fishery and we hope that
there will be
more anglers in the future. I would like to thank Phil Marsteller
and the Staff of Amazon Tours Inc. for all their help in
making this such a first class
event. We look forward to next year.

2002 Rio Negro 1st Annual Peacock Bass Fly Tournament Official
Results
The
Tournament was held at the Rio Negro Lodge in Amazonas Brazil.
The watershed that was fished included the Rio Negro, Aridaha,
and Atawe Rivers. Feb 26-28, 2002.
All fish were caught by standard fly casting technique. IGFA
rules were not in effect. This being the first year of the
tourney we were out to have a good time and catch fish. We
will consider IGFA rules for future years with a 20-LB tippet
class.
The winner was determined
by the top 3 largest fish in inches per day. There was a
special board made with a 36"yardstick
affixed to the board. The fish was put on the board with the
nose of the fish against the stopper at 0 inches. The fish
was measured and quickly released. All measurements were recorded
and any fish over 5 lbs. were recorded. All fish under 17 inches
were recorded for the total number of fish per angler.

Qualifying fish {17 " minimum
length} 143 Peacock bass |
The 17-inch minimum was agreed upon by all after it was determined
that it would be a good starting point and would not be an
easy mark to hit. Most of the smaller Butterfly Peacock Bass
are not over 16.5 inches. As it turned out the 17-inch rule
was a great minimum length and will be used in future years.
Next years event will be held during the week of Feb1-9,2003
and will once again be a 3 day event and will be a Rolex/IGFA
Inshore Qualifying Tournament.
